Biography
Eric Lamaz was born in Montreal, Quebec. Eric was taught horseback riding from an early age, his first trainer was Diana Dubuque. Lamaz grew up in Montreal, in a troubled house under the supervision of his grandmother. At the age of 15, he dropped out of school and began working in the equestrian industry under the guidance of the best trainers such as Roger Delorier, George Morris, Jay Hayes and Hugh Graham. His natural gift for riding was noticed, and with little financial support he was able to create his way to the top of the sport.
Eric currently lives in Schomberg, Ontario, where he coaches young athletes at his Torrey Pines stable.
Career
Eric's career took off in the early 1990s. He began to participate in the Grand Prix (top level) in 1992, and a year later he was taken to the Canadian equestrian team. In 1994, he represented Canada at the World Equestrian Games.
In 2007, Lamaz became the first Canadian rival in 20 years to be in the top ten in the world ranking. He was also the first North American competitor to exceed one million prize money per year, a third of this income he received as a result of winning the CN International Grand Prix in Spruce Meadows.
In January 2009, Rolex World Ranking Show Jumping and the International Equestrian Federation, for the first time, Lamaz was nominated for first place. Eric returned to the top in July 2010.
Olympic Games
Eric Lamaz was taken to the Canadian national team for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , Georgia. But he was expelled and suspended for 4 years due to a positive cocaine test result. This suspension was reduced to 7 months after the appeal. Eric's return to the national team was considered, and as a key member of the Canadian national team, he was renewed for the Sydney Olympic Games . But he was again expelled from the team when the tests tested positive for illegal substances (cold medicine and diet pills, and later cocaine). This time the ban was for life, but was ultimately lifted.
Eric spent the next 7 years rebuilding his career and damaged reputation.
