Churyuk-Su

Churyuk-Su [2] [3] (also Chorokh-Su [4] [5] , Small Indol , Shirin-Su , Rassan-Bai [5] ; Ukrainian Churyuk-Su , Crimean-Tat. Çürük Suv, Chyuryuk Suv ) - a river in the north-east of the Plain-Steppe Crimea . The small valley of the tiny river is densely populated - on the river there are settlements: Izyumovka , Pervomaiskoe , Sadovoe , Izobilnoye , Makovsky , Zhuravki , Novopokrovka and Vasilkovoye [6] . Churuk-Su in the lower reaches has been straightened for 11.4 km and turned into a collector of the North Crimean Canal [7] , flows into the shallow, swampy lagoon Sivasha, about 3 km north of the village of Vasilkovoye [8] . The various names of the Chorokh-Su river go back to tribal names - choro , choros , serenes , andydes of the land of the beir of Shirinsky [4] . In historical documents there are various variants of the name: Seren-Su, Rassan-Bai, Gassan-Bai, Shirin-Su, Maly Andaley, Maly Indol. Chorokh-Su - the easternmost river of all flowing from the northern slope of the Crimean mountains. It belongs to the rivers of the southern Sivash basin, although from the second half of the 20th century the river reaches its historical mouth only in very full-flowing years. It originates at the eastern end of the Main Ridge, in the upper reaches the channel lies among low mountains and hills, in the lower reaches it is a typical steppe river. The low water level of the river is explained by several factors: a small amount of precipitation in this relatively arid area, a small catchment area, and also an almost complete absence of feeding karst sources [9] .

Hydrography

The source of Churyuk-Su is located outside the western outskirts of the city of Old Crimea , at the northern slope of the Grytsya mountain, 665 meters high, slightly south of the P-23 Simferopol – Feodosiya highway [10] . According to other sources, it is formed by the confluence of the source rivers Starokrymskaya and Monastyrskaya , at an altitude of 220 m above sea level [11] , but on the map the river is called Churyuk-Su even before the confluence [12] . The main tributaries are the Starokrymskaya and Monastyrskaya rivers, which now flow into the Starokrymsky reservoir . It flows through the city of Old Crimea . In 1956, near the city of Stary Krym, a reservoir was built on the river, which collects part of its flow, especially flood waters [9] . Later, the Novopokrovsky reservoir was built, as well as 9 ponds: Izyumovsky; cascade of 4 ponds in the village of Pervomaisk; Izobilnensky and 2 Zhuravsky ponds (Upper and Lower). The length of the river bed is 33 km. With an average annual water flow of only about 0.12 m³ / s and with a flow volume of only 3.7 million cubic meters. m per year [13] , Churyuk-Su belongs to the shallow rivers of Crimea [9] . The catchment area is 204 km² [5] (according to other sources - 148 km [14] ), the CCM crosses the river. Here, several discharge channels also flow into it. Churyuk-Su flows into Sivash 3 kilometers east of the village of Krasnovka . Low-water beams flow into the river, not far from the source: from the left bank of the Agarmysh, from the right - Bakatash; in the middle reaches, it takes the right tributary - the Salt Bar [7] .

On the map, which Lieutenant General A. V. Suvorov used in the 70s of the 18th century, this river is called Buzlyk (translated from the Turkic languages as “icy”). At the same time, its other name was also used - Shirin-Su, which means Persian in Persian. But already in the second half of the 19th century, the locals called it “Churuk-Su” or “Chyuryuk-Su”, which means “rotten, spoiled, useless water” translated from the Crimean Tatar. The reason for this was the runoff of tanneries located on the banks of the river in the city of Old Crimea and the surrounding villages [14] .
