History
Even under the Han Empire, Bodao County (僰 道 县) was formed in these places. Under the Northern Song Empire in 1114, it was renamed Yibin (宜宾 县).
In 1951, the urbanized part of Yibin County was allocated to a separate city of Yibin, which became subordinate to the Special District of Yibin (宜宾 专区). In 1970, Yibin Special District was renamed Yibin District (宜宾 地区). In 1996, by the decision of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, the city of Yibin and Yibin County were disbanded. The territory of the former Yibin District became the Urban District of Yibin, and the territory of the former Yibin City became the Tsuiping District in its composition.
