Previously considered a subspecies of Saguinus bicolor , it was later isolated in a separate species along with two subspecies of S. b. ochraceus S. b. martinsi . [one]
Like other tamarins, these primates are monomorphic - external differences between individuals are minimal. Sizes of the subspecies S. m. ochraceus : body length on average 24.7 cm, tail on average 39.5 cm. S. m. martinsi is slightly less: body length on average 20.8 cm, tail length on average 36.6 cm. [1]
They inhabit lowland tropical primary and secondary forests , preferring the dense crowns of the lower tiers of the forest. The diet contains fruits, flowers, nectar, tree juices and small animals (including frogs, snails, lizards, spiders and insects). Unlike marmosets, the jaw apparatus of tamarins is not adapted for the efficient extraction of wood juices. Family groups form from 4 to 15 individuals (usually from 2 to 8). [one]
