Biography

Dutch by birth. Admitted to the Russian fleet on May 11, 1698 in Amsterdam with the rank of commander . In the same year he arrived in Arkhangelsk , then sent to serve in Voronezh .

In 1703 he was promoted to captain .

In 1704 he was appointed captain of the newly built ship “ Narva ”, with whom he came from the Olonetsk shipyard to Kotlin . The following year, commanding the same ship on the squadron of Vice Admiral Kruys, he repelled the attack of the Swedish fleet on Kotlin.

In 1706, the Flight was sent to Kazan to command the ships built there with the task of preventing the rebellious Cossacks of Bulavin from climbing up the Volga.

In 1707 he was transferred to the Baltic Fleet , where he received the post of commander of the flagship Oliphant . The following year he was sent to Arkhangelsk to oversee shipbuilding.

In 1710 he was appointed commander of a detachment of 3 frigates. Raising a pennant braid on the ship " St. Paul ", he left Arkhangelsk with the aim of following the detachment to the Baltic, but due to the loss of the mast he was forced to return to Arkhangelsk. In 1711, after repairing the damage, he again went to his destination. In Khristianzand, he connected with the ships of his detachment and cruised with them in the Kattegat Strait, capturing several enemy ships in prize money. In the spring of 1712 he continued cruising in Kattegat, and in August he joined the Danish fleet , located off the coast of Pomerania . When parking at Gribswald on the ship of A. Reis, Peter I went to sea to visit the Danish fleet. After the king’s departure, Reis, together with the courts of the Danish fleet, captured several prizes and in the autumn with two frigates arrived in Riga .

In late 1712, Reis received the rank of captain-commander .
