Rodriguez made his debut in the professional ring in October 2010 at the age of 17 years.
In 2013, he knocked out experienced compatriots Manuel Vargas and Victor Ruiz.
September 21, 2013 lost by knockout star boxer from Nicaragua, Roman Gonzalez .
On March 22, 2014, he knocked out the Filipino, Merlito Sabillo , and became the new WBO world champion in the minimum weight category.
On August 9, 2014, he defeated the Japanese, Katsunari Takayama , in the unification bout, and became the new IBF world champion in the minimum weight category.
