Biography
Valentin Zakharovich Purygin was born in the village of Osinovka, Saratov Region, in a peasant family. In 1931, the family of the future artist moved to a permanent place of residence in the city of Kuibyshev (Samara). In the studio of Samara artists G.P. Podbelsky and P.A. Krasnov, he received the first lessons in drawing and painting. At the age of 13, he entered the Moscow Secondary Art School , where he studied from 1939 to 1944. He continues his education at the Moscow Art Institute. V.I. Surikov , where he worked in the studio of the famous Soviet artist G. G. Ryazhsky . Purygin returned to Kuibyshev in 1951, after graduation. Together with Samara artists G.V. Filatov, I.E. Komissarov, A.A. Kulakovsky, Yu. I. Filippov and Purygin began to explore the characteristic motifs of the Volga landscapes. At the same time, young artists developed the theme of the transformation of nature, urbanization and the construction of a new life. In 1954, Purygin was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR .
3 years after graduation, Purygin took part in a number of major republican and all-Union exhibitions:
- In 1955 he took part in the exhibition of works by artists of the RSFSR in Moscow.
- In 1956 he took part in the exhibition of works by artists of the RSFSR, dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Great October Revolution in Moscow.
- In 1961 he took part in the All-Union Art Exhibition in Moscow.
In the 60s, Purygin was fond of French post-impressionists, pointillism of Ser and Signac, whose work influenced the artist's style. He is looking for a new pictorial expression (landscapes of Gurzuf and Sudak).
In 1971-1972, the first personal exhibitions of the artist took place in Kuibyshev and Moscow. In 1973, the artist moved to the suburbs (Zagorsk), and then to Moscow.
While working in Moscow, Purygin continued to take part in major professional exhibitions:
- In 1975, he took part in the fifth republican art exhibition "Soviet Russia".
- In 1976 he took part in the All-Union art exhibition "Glory to Labor".
- In 1977, he took part in a group exhibition of twenty-three Moscow artists in Moscow.
5 years after moving to Moscow, the artist returned to Samara in 1978.
Purygin continued to participate in exhibitions in the early 80s:
- In 1981, participation in the All-Russian art exhibition "In the Homeland"
- In 1981, a personal exhibition in Kuibyshev
- In 1982, a personal exhibition in Kazan
- In 1982, participation in the International Plein Air in Bulgaria
In 1982, Purygin was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR. In 1991, at the Samara Museum of Art, and after 2 years in Moscow, at the Artist’s House, Purygin’s personal exhibitions were held, which received wide public resonance, but the 90s were a difficult period in the life of the Samara artist.
Purygin died on October 29, 2002 in Samara.
To the first anniversary of the death of Purygin at the Volga-Film studio a tape was shot about him. Written and directed by A. Solonitsyn, cameraman A. Nazarov. The film captures the Volga landscapes that inspired the artist, his workshop, Valentin Zakharovich himself. About the master speak his friends, associates, admirers of talent. In the same year, it was decided to create a museum of Valentin Purygin in Samara, but until today his works (over ten thousand paintings, sketches, collages, drawings, etchings, drafts) are stored in the storeroom of the Samara Art Museum.
The last solo exhibition was in the Samara Regional Art Museum in 2016. to the 90th anniversary of this original artist.
