According to the 2000 census [1] , the district has 40,875 residents comprising 15,587 households and 11,394 families . The population density is 29 people per km². There are 17,583 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of 12 buildings per km². Racial composition of the population: white - 96.88%, African - Americans - 1.50%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.24%, Asians - 0.32%, Hawaiians - 0.04%, representatives of other races - 0.15 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.88%. Hispanics made up 0.53% of the population.
Of the total number of households , 34.00% are children under the age of 18 years, 58.40% of households are couples living together, 10.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 26.90% of households households are not related to families, 23.20% of households consist of one person, 10.60% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.60 people and the average family size is 3.04 people.
The age structure of the district: 27.00% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% from 65 and older.
