“Magic” (translated from English - “Magic, Magic”) is the first single of the British band Coldplay from their sixth studio album Ghost Stories . Released March 3, 2014 via Parlophone Records.

About the song

The song was recorded by the group in 2013 during sessions of the sixth studio album at their The Bakery and The Beehive studios in north London , England . The studios were specially created by the group to work on their two previous albums - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and Mylo Xyloto .

Cover

The cover of the single is styled as an etching . Designer - Czech etcher Mila Fürstova [4] . The central element is a white dove on a blue background. Various small scenes are displayed in the pigeon, similar to the cover of the Ghost Stories album.

Music video

Concept

The video for “Magic” was directed by Yunas Okerlund [5] . The video, stylized as a mute short film , starred Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi . In the clip, the name of the song “Magic” is literally interpreted - the plot of the clip is designed in the spirit of old illusion shows [6] . The premiere of the five-minute video took place at Vevo Music Video Hosting on April 7, 2014.

The plot of the clip is built around a magic show, here the director literally interpreted the name of the song, as the lyrics contain hints of various “tricks” and “tricks” [7] . The clip itself is presented in the form of black-and-white silent films [8] , and plays with silent films of the beginning of the 20th century [9] , contains such signs as opening credits and ragtime - jazz improvisation, similar to those used at the dawn of cinema [10] . The plot of the clip is compared with the 2006 film " Prestige ", not paying attention to the details of the film [11] .

Story

Cecile ( Zhang Ziyi ) - a magician in a traveling circus , performs in an illusion show with Christoph ( Chris Martin ) - a young magician and his assistant. Together they perform the usual “magic” actions, such as throwing knives and dividing the torso. Cecile is married to Claude (also played by Chris Martin) - a famous magician who is an alcoholic and abuses his wife . Continuing to speak with Cecile, Christophe somehow notices bruises on her hand, and later becomes a witness to the scene as Claude screams at his wife and brings her to tears. Christoph has an idea how to help Cecile. He exercises first in telekinesis , and then in levitation . Having mastered levitation, Christophe invites Cecile to the tent to demonstrate this to her. Claude sees them, becomes furious and accuses Cecile of cheating on him with Christoph. Drunk and about to beat Cecile, he hears the bells, and leaves the tent. Christophe, using his supernormal abilities, makes Claude take to the air and fly into the sky. Further, Cecile and Christoph continue to perform and show the audience new tricks without their cruel impresario .
