Eastern Russia : the Far East ( Magadan Region , Khabarovsk Territory , Primorsky Territory ), Japan ( Hokkaido ) [1] [2] .
Description
Very small mosquitoes, length about 2 mm, wings narrow. Mouth organs are not developed ( adults do not feed). The life cycle is univoltine, adults are observed from June to July, swarming occurs at an altitude of 1 to 5 m (several hundred individuals participate in clusters). Larvae feed on microscopic algae. Larvae are found among water mosses in small, fast streams and rivers with a high oxygen content along the upper reaches of the Kolyma and Amur rivers. The species was first described in 1979 by the Russian dipterologist E. A. Makarchenko ( Biological and Soil Institute, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences , Vladivostok , Russia ) and named after the Soviet entomologist , Professor Boris Borisovich Rodendorf [1] [2] [3] .
