History
The creation of the museum was initiated by Stanislav Vyspiansky in 1901, when he placed an exhibition of unrealized stained glass projects at the National Museum, which was planned to be installed in the Wawel Cathedral . According to the will of Stanislav Vyspiansky, these stained glass projects and his last works from the art studio, which was located in the village of Vegzce near Krakow, were transferred to the Krakow National Museum. In 1920, other works by Stanislav Vyspiansky from the Mannghi collection of the Polish art critic Felix Jasensky were transferred to the National Museum.
In 1932, the Cracow City Council, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the death of Stanislav Vyspiansky, founded a separate gallery in the National Museum dedicated to the artist’s work. In the 70s of the XX century, the National Museum, together with the city authorities resumed work on the creation of a museum dedicated to the work of Stanislav Vyspiansky. A separate room was allocated for the museum in a residential building at 9. Kanonichnaya Street, 9. Stanislav Vyspiansky Museum was inaugurated on November 28, 1983.
In October 2002, the museum on Kanonichnaya Street 9 was closed due to a change in ownership of this building. For the collection of the museum, a separate building was allocated under the name “ Sholaysky House ” at Schepanskaya Square, 9. In this building, the Stanislav Vyspiansky Museum operated from April 2004 to April 2012, when the status of the museum was changed to a branch of the National Museum. Since April 2012, the branch has been used for temporary art exhibitions organized by the National Museum. The works of Stanislav Vyspiansky are in storerooms and exhibited in some cases. Currently, a small part of the work of Stanisław Vyspiansky is on display in the permanent exhibition Zawsze Młoda. Polska Sztuka około 1900 ”(Always young. Polish art around 1900).
