History
In the XVII century, during the period of the Venetian Republic , the Venetian sailors chose the village of Gouvia as an ideal place to create a naval base. They built at the entrance to the bay, in Commeno, a small fort, now known as Scarpa Fort. Some remains of the towers of this fort still exist in private ownership.
In 1716, the Venetians also built a shipyard on the shores of the lagoon in Gouvier. The building was used for general maintenance and repair of combat galleys (stationary or passing through Corfu). The Venetian arsenal has been preserved almost completely (columns, arches, vaults), with the exception of the roof.
In the 19th century, the main Orthodox church of the city was built, dedicated to All Saints ("Ayi Pandes").
In the summer, the number of residents increases several times due to the numerous tourists.
