The park was founded in 1982 and is currently managed by the Main Forestry Administration of Finland . In 2010, a storm swept through the park, as a result of which many trees were felled. However, it was announced that this would diversify the fauna of the national park - dipterous and coleoptera settled in decaying trees [2] .
Its area is up to 49.8 km² (19.2 miles²). The landscape of the park is impressive - endless dense forests, deep gorges, crevices, mountains and pristine lakes. The main attraction of the park is the Helvetinkolu cleft, located in the southeastern part of the Helvetinjärvi lake. Helvetinjärvi's attendance for 2010 is about 23,000 people [1] . In 2009, this figure was 33,000 people [3] .
