Biography
In 1929-1930 he worked as a laboratory assistant at the Moscow Central Research Institute of Fisheries .
In 1930 he graduated from the biological department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. In 1932-1939 he worked as the head of the ichthyology department of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov . Doctor of Biological Sciences (1939), Professor (1940). Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences .
In 1941-1977 - Head of the Department of Ichthyology, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov . Head of the Amur expedition of Moscow State University (1945-1949).
In 1946-1949 he was the head of the raw materials section and a member of the Presidium of the Technical Council of the Ministry of Fisheries of the eastern regions of the USSR.
In 1950-1964 - deputy chairman, since 1965 - chairman of the Ichthyological Commission of the USSR Ministry of Fisheries. In 1950-1955 - the head of the Amur salmon expedition.
In 1956-1967 - head of the laboratory of ichthyology, in 1967-1977 - head of the laboratory of ecology of lower aquatic vertebrates of the Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Animal Ecology of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
He was a member of the editorial board of journals: “Zoological Journal” (1951-1960), “Fisheries” (1955-1963).
Founder and chief editor of the journal "Issues of ichthyology" in 1953-1961.
He is the founder of a number of areas in ichthyology, made a significant contribution to the development of the problem of the species, the patterns of variability and systematics of fish. He described a number of new species and intraspecific forms in fish. He developed the theory of faunistic complexes, the idea of a population as a self-regulating system, revealed the relationships between the species that make up these complexes. He developed the problem of analysis of fossil forms, subfossil faunas.
Awards and Prizes
- Stalin Prize of the third degree (1950) - for the development and biological justification of a system of measures to increase the fish productivity of the Amur River
