History
Orthodoxy began to infiltrate Canada in the 19th century. In the 1870s, Syro-Lebanese Orthodox confession migrated to Quebec , visited by priests from the United States. In 1890, Romanians began to migrate to Canada. In 1896, in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Ruthenians and Bukovynians began to migrate en masse to the countryside, who also built Orthodox churches in their villages. In the XX century, the Greeks began to move. Before the 1917 revolution, all Orthodox parishes in Canada were under the jurisdiction of the North American and Aleutian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church .
In November 1900, the first permanent priest, Priest Jacob Korchinsky, arrived in Canada (in Edmonton). By this time, ten Orthodox churches had been built or were under construction in Canada. By 1906, there were 17 parishes in Canada, four priests residing permanently, and a few more occasionally coming to the country.
In 1916, the territorial vicariousness of the North American Diocese was created, and Bishop Alexander (Nemolovsky) permanently resided in Canada .
After 1917, communication with the Church in Russia became much more difficult, along with help from there dried up, after which many national parishes began to join their ethnic jurisdictions.
However, in 1920 there were 66 parishes; vicarism was divided into four deanships. In 1926, the Ascension Monastery in Stifton was created.
In 1927, the Montreal Vicariate was created as part of the Russian North American Metropolis to nourish the Canadian Arab parishes, but it did not last long; since 1931, the bishop who served him served in the United States.
In 1934, there were 67 parishes (divided into 6 deans).
Together with the reunification of the Russian North American Metropolitanate with the Church Abroad in 1935, the Montreal Vicariate was extended to the whole of Canada and nourished mainly the parish of the Russian tradition as part of a single metropolitan okrug.
In 1936, an independent Montreal diocese was established within Eastern Canada. However, soon the department was annexed to the Western Canada.
In 1940, an independent diocese was created in Canada.
After World War II, parishes in Ontario and Quebec began to grow rapidly in connection with emigration.
In 1954, the diocese receives the status of the Archdiocese . The diocese itself was divided into two parts (West Canada with a cent in Edmonton and East Canada with a center in Montreal) because of its size, but most of the time in Canada only one bishop served.
In November 1946, the re-demarcation of the North American Metropolis and the Russian Church Abroad reduced the number of Canadian parishes of the North American Metropolis.
In the 1960s, when the mass transition of parishes into the English language of worship began, an acute shortage of priests began to be felt in the diocese, especially those who knew English well.
In 1970, both dioceses were reunited with a center in Montreal . In 1981, the department was moved to Ottawa .
