Geographical position
The city is located in the north-eastern part of the region, on the left bank of the Senegal River, near the border with Mauritania , at a distance of approximately 515 kilometers east of the country's capital, Dakar . The absolute height is 14 meters above sea level [1] .
Population
According to the 2002 census, the population of Bakel was 10,653 people [2] . The dynamics of the population of the city by years:

Transport
5 km south of the city is the airport of the same name ( IATA : BX, ICAO : GOTB) [1] . There is a cross-border ferry service with the Moorish city of Gurae .

The city is a fort built in the middle of the XIX century by the French colonial authorities [3] .
