Biography
He graduated from Vilnius University in 1807 with a Ph.D. At the end of 1822, at the suggestion of Prince Adam Czartoryski, he was elected (approved at the beginning of 1823) by the Council of Vilna University and made an ordinary professor of pure mathematics.
Before his election, Twardowski stood apart from his academic life and lived in his rich estate, studying mathematics. He was the leader of the nobility of the Pinsk district of Minsk province. Tvardovsky was in the position of rector at the time of the philomat process , which led to the closure of the university. In order to combat this movement, Tvardovsky developed the “Rules for University Students”, which introduced enhanced supervision of students within and outside the university. However, the measures taken by the university authorities did not lead to the desired results; on May 17, 1823, Twardowski was even arrested, but soon released. When, in 1824, Novosiltsev declared to Tvardovsky that the government did not trust the university and would be forced to reorganize it, he, seeing his impotence, resigned and retired to his estate.
