Sopetran ( Spanish Sopetrán ) is a city and municipality in northwestern Colombia , in the territory of the department of Antioquia . Part of the Western Antioquia subregion .

History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on February 22, 1616 . The municipality of Sopetran was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1814 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the central part of the department, in the mountainous terrain of Central Cordillera , east of the Cauca River , approximately 28 kilometers northwest of Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 733 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of Sopetran is bordered in the north by the municipality of Olaya , in the northeast and east by the municipality of Belmira , in the south by the municipalities of San Jeronimo and Ebehiko , in the west by the municipality of Santa Fe de Antioquia . The area of the municipality is 223 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2013 was 14,453 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by year:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 50.2% of the population of Sopetran, women - respectively 49.8%. Racially whites and mestizos made up 87.5% of the city’s population; Blacks , mulattoes, and Riesale - 12.5% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 89.2%.
Economy
The basis of the economy Sopetran is agricultural production . Coffee, bananas, maize, yucca , as well as various vegetables and fruits are grown on the territory of the municipality. Cattle breeding is developed.
70% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are enterprises of the trade sector, 19.7% - enterprises of the service sector, 9.1% - industrial enterprises, 1.2% - enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
