Biography

Cyrus Lundell was born in Austin on November 5, 1907 . He studied at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas , in 1932 received a bachelor of arts degree. From 1928 he worked as an assistant physiologist at the Research Organization of Tropical Plants in Washington. Went to British Honduras (modern Belize ) to experiment with the sapodillos used to make bubble gum.

In December 1932, Landell from the air discovered the ancient city of Maya, later called Calakmul , “the city of two neighboring pyramids”. From 1932 to 1936 he worked as an assistant at the Ann Arbor Botanical Garden, in 1936 he became a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan and was appointed assistant curator. From 1933 to 1944, Landell traveled repeatedly to Central America with the support of the Carnegie Institute and the University of Michelin. Subsequently, he discovered another 15 cultural monuments of the Maya. Until 1944, Cyrus Landell worked as a curator of flowering plants at the University of Michigan.

In 1944, Landell moved to Dallas, the next four years he taught at Southern Methodist University. From 1946 to 1972 he worked at the Texas Research Organization in Renner (Dallas area).

Cyrus Longwright was the founder of the botanical magazine Wrightia . He was also the main author of the monograph Flora of Texas . In total, he gave the names of more than 2000 new plant species.

In 1981, Landell was awarded the highest state award of Guatemala - the Order of Quetzal .

On March 28, 1994, Cyrus Longuert Landell passed away.
