Biography
Born into a wealthy family. He graduated from the University of Turin , a philologist by education. He worked as a journalist.
In 1955-1994 he was a member of the Italian Liberal Party (ILP), from 1969 - a member of the National Council of ILP, in 1976-1985 - General Secretary of the ILP.
From 1970 in politics, from 1976 to November 1990, he was a deputy of the parliament of the VII-XI convocations. In 1989-1990 - Chairman of the Defense Committee.
Repeatedly served on the Italian Council of Ministers:
- July 1984 - July 1986 - Minister of Ecology in the Government of B. Craxi
- August 1986 - April 1987 - Minister of Industry, Crafts and Trade in the Government of B. Craxi
- April 1987 - March 1988 - Minister of Defense in the Government of J. Goria
- April 1988 - July 1989 - Minister of Defense in the Government of C. de Mita
- July 1990 - December 1991 - Mayor of Turin.
In 1990-1993 he was chairman of the Liberal Party. In 1992-1994 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament.
In June 1993, announced the creation of the center-left Liberal Democratic Union (Unione Liberaldemocratica), which in February 1995 merged with the Federation of Liberals, which he headed. In 1995, he was one of the founders of the l'Ulivo ( Oliva ) coalition.
In 2007-2010 - in the Democratic Party , since 2010 - in the Alliance for Italy.
In 2006-2008 - Senator from Lombardy , Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee on Defense.
In 1992, he admitted his involvement in the Masonic lodge [1] .
Author of the books Liberal Diary (1979), Freedom of the Eighties (1981, Causes of Freedom (1981), etc.
He was a supporter of the expansion of the American military presence in Italy.
