The International Standard Name Identifier ( International Standard Name Identifier , abbreviated as ISNI ) is a method for uniquely identifying creators and publishers of such media content as books, television programs, newspaper articles, etc. This identifier consists of 16 digits divided into four blocks.

The standard was developed under the auspices of the international organization for standardization (ISO), as a draft international standard 27729 . The valid standard was published on March 15, 2012. The technical committee ISO 46, subcommittee 9 (TC 46 / SC 9) is responsible for the development of the standard.
ISNI can be used to resolve ambiguities of names that might otherwise be confused, and it binds data about names that are used in all branches of the media industry.
Content
ISNI Application
ISNI allows you to assign a unique identifier to each content creator (for example, the author's pseudonym or publisher imprint ) in the form of a unique number. This unique number can be associated with any of the many other identifiers used in the media industry.
An example of the need to use such an identifier is a musical performer, who is also the author of music and poetry. Three different types of activity may require three different identifiers that are not related to each other. In accordance with the ISNI system, the contractor will have one ISNI binding entry. Different databases can exchange data about this particular person without resorting to methods such as comparing text strings. Especially important is the presence of a digital identifier with the same names of the creators. For example, if there are several people in the bases with the first and last name of John Smith, it is not always easy to determine which records belong to which person.
If the author has published his work under several different names or pseudonyms, each such name will receive its own ISNI.
ISNI can be used by libraries and archives in the exchange of information catalogs, for more accurate information retrieval on the Internet and in databases, and can also help in managing rights internationally and in the digital environment.
ORCID
A block of ISNI identifiers, also called Open ID of the researcher and the author of the research) is reserved for scientific researchers and is coordinated by a separate organization [1] . Researchers are free to create and get their own ORCID number [2] . The actions of the two organizations are carefully coordinated [1] [2] .
ISNI Management
ISNI is regulated by the international agency ISNI-IA. This is a non-profit organization registered in the UK. The company was founded by a consortium of organizations, which include the International Confederation of Authors and Composers Societies and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). The company is managed by a board of representatives from each of the consortium organizations, as well as representatives from the National Library of France and the British Library .
ISNI Assignment
ISNI-IA uses a number assignment system containing a user interface, a description of the data structure , ambiguity resolution algorithms , and a database that meets the requirements of the ISO standard, and also uses existing technologies where possible. The system is primarily based on the services of the Virtual International Authoritative File (VIAF), which was developed by OCLC for use in the aggregation of library catalogs.
Access to the destination system and database, as well as to the numbers created, is controlled by independent organizations, registration agencies. These registration agencies work directly with clients, providing the necessary formats for providing data, as well as reimbursing ISNI-IA for maintaining the destination system. Registration agencies are appointed by ISNI-IA, but are managed and funded independently.
On the territory of Russia, ISNI assigns the Russian copyright society COPIRUS , which is a member of the international agency ISNI-IA.
