Biography

Georg Volkens was born in Berlin on July 13, 1855 . He studied at the University of Würzburg and Berlin with professors Julius von Sachs and Alexander Brown . In 1882, under the guidance of Professor Simon Schwendener, he received a Ph.D. at the University of Berlin.

In 1884-1885 Volkens traveled through the deserts of Egypt . In 1887 he underwent a habilitation in Berlin, becoming a privat-docent of the University of Berlin. At the same time he worked as a volunteer with Adolf Engler and, later, with Schwendener. From 1892 to 1894 he explored Mount Kilimanjaro , in 1897 published a book in which he generalized the results of his observations. In 1895, Georg Volkens became a professor at the University of Berlin.

Since 1898, Volkens worked at the Berlin Botanical Museum as the head of the colony flora department. In 1899-1900 he visited the Caroline Islands , in 1901-1902 he studied the flora of the environs of Beitensorg .

Since 1903, Volkens taught at the School of Gardeners in the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden.

January 10, 1917 Georg Ludwig August Volkens passed away.
