Biography

Gilbert came from Aragon and joined the Templars at a young age. He served in Provence and Aragon and took part in the Reconquista . In 1183, it was mentioned as the commander of the city of Jerusalem, and from October 1185 to August 1189 [1] he headed the division of the order in Aragon . In February 1193 , after the death of Robert de Sable , he was elected Grand Master.

Gilbert promoted peace between Christians and Muslims in the Levant by concluding a diplomatic agreement with the Egyptian Sultan al-Adil I. Some politicians and members of the order did not agree with this policy and accused him of treason.

In 1196, tensions between the Templars and hospitaliers escalated. Between them there was a dispute over the ownership of a small castle near Margat. The castle was occupied by hospital admirers , which almost provoked an armed conflict. Only the intervention of Pope Innocent III prevented him: the hospitals left the castle [2] .

Gilbert also took care of the consolidation of the possessions of the order in France and Puglia.

In Spain, the Templars took an active part in the Reconquista and received in 1196 from King Alfonso II of Aragon, some land awards in Alfambra as a reward [2] [3] .
