USS Cushing (DD-797) - Fletcher - class destroyer , which was in service with the US Navy during World War II . It was named after Commander William W. Cushing, a civil war hero (November 4, 1842 - December 17, 1874).

The destroyer was laid down on May 3, 1943 at the Bethlehem Steel shipyard, launched on September 30, 1943 and put into operation on January 17, 1944, under the command of Commander Louis Wolf.

History
World War II
On August 24, 1944, the destroyer joined the 5th US Navy to participate in the Marian-Palau operation . Cushing covered aircraft carriers during the attack on the islands of Mindanao , Samar , Cebu , Negros .
On September 17, 1944, the destroyer supported the airborne troops at the Battle of Angaur .
In October 1944, the destroyer took part in the battle of Leyte .
In December 1944, Cushing saved several downed pilots.
The destroyer took part in the battle for Iwo Jima and the battle for Okinawa .
February 3, 1947 Cushing was withdrawn to the reserve.
Rewards
The destroyer was awarded six stars for service in World War II and two stars for participating in the Korean War .
