History

In 2000, Albania was officially recognized as a “potential candidate country” for accession to the European Union; in 2003, the parties began negotiations to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement . The agreement was signed on June 12, 2006, thus completing the first important step towards full membership of Albania in the EU. On April 1, 2009, Albania entered the NATO military alliance, and on April 28, 2009, Albania applied for membership in the European Union.

On November 8, 2010, the Council of the European Union approved the introduction of a visa-free regime for Albanian citizens who wish to visit European Union countries for tourist purposes, and on December 10, 2010 this decision officially entered into force. The country received the official status of a candidate country for joining the European Union on June 24, 2014 [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] .

According to Eurostat data, as of 2017, almost a third of the population of Albania have a residence permit in the European Union [8] . Residence permit gives the right to live and work in one of the EU states year-round.
