Biography
Adalbert Schnitzlein was born on April 15, 1814 in the city of Feuchtwangen in the family of the botanist Wilhelm Schnitzlein (1780-1856). He studied at a school in Ansbach , in 1834 he entered the University of Munich . In 1836 he received a Ph.D. at the University of Erlangen . The next few years he practiced in Geneva , Speyer and Mainburnheim . In 1841-1842 he continued his studies in Munich. Since 1843 he worked in a pharmacy in Erlangen , in 1845 he became a habilitated pharmacist. In 1850, Schnitzlein was appointed professor of botany at the University of Erlangen, and also worked as the director of the Erlangen Botanical Garden replacing Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch in this position. He sold his pharmacy and devoted himself completely to science.
During one of the botanical excursions, Schnitzlein, after an unsuccessful jump, damaged his spine. October 24, 1868 he died.
The Schnitzlein collection of illustrations, published in four parts since 1843, was completed in 1870 by Augustus Wilhelm Eichler .
Schnitzlein's main herbarium was transferred to the University of Erlangen (ER).
