Artashes Balasievich Karinyan - People's Commissar of Justice of the Armenian SSR in 1921-1923, in 1924-1928 - Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Armenian SSR.

Biography

Artashes Balasievich Karinyan was born on October 30 [ November 11 ], 1886 in the village of Balakhani in Baku [2] . His father worked for a long time in the oil industry of Baku. Artashes received his primary education at the 1st Baku Gymnasium [3] .

Artashes Karinyan actively participated in student movements and strikes of workers, edited the student magazine "Nabat" [4] . In 1906, under the nickname "Brutus" he published his first work - the literary and journalistic book "Literature and Life", which was devoted to the study of the play "Children of the Sun" by Maxim Gorky [2] . In the same year, Karinyan entered the law faculty of St. Petersburg State University , which he graduated in 1910 [4] . During 1905-1907, Karinyan’s work was published in the Armenian Bolshevik press, in particular in the newspapers “Thunderstorm” and “Voice”. Significant are his articles “On the evolution of one party”, “Our latest anarchists”, which were published under the nickname Levon Brutyan [2] . Member of the RSDLP since 1907 [4] . In the same year, together with a group of students, Karinyan went to the city of Terioki (now Zelenogorsk ) in Finland and listened to the report of Vladimir Lenin . At the same time, Karinyan personally met with Stepan Shaumyan , Suren Spandaryan , Alyosha Japaridze , Vladislav Kasparov, Ivan Violet , Sarkis Kasyan , Mashadi Azizbekov and many others, he worked in the Baku Bolshevik press, in particular in the newspapers Baku Worker, Gudok " [5] .

Since 1908, he began working in the editorial office of the newspaper "Caucasian Worker Leaflet" [6] . After graduating from university, Karinyan became a member of the editorial board of the newly created New Word magazine in 1911, Karinyan’s works were published in the Pravda newspaper [5] . In 1913, for his Bolshevik activities, Artashes Karinyan was repressed in the city of Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd ), then he was transferred to St. Petersburg and remained there until the February Revolution of 1917. This fall, Karinyan went to Baku. There he was appointed to the post of chief editor of the newspaper "Worker" and "Izvestia" of the Baku Council of Military Deputies, was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Baku Council [7] .

On April 25, 1918, the Baku Commune was created and Artashes Karinyan was appointed to the post of Commissioner of Justice [7] . After the closure of the commune, Karinyan went to Moscow and worked in the Armenian Commissariat at the People’s Commissariat for Nationalities of the RSFSR in 1918-1920, published the printed organ of the commissariat “Red Banner”, and edited the weekly newspaper “Communist”. By a decision of the CPSU (b) Artashes Karinyan in 1921 moved to the capital of Soviet Armenia - Yerevan , was appointed to the post of People’s Commissioner of Justice of Armenia [8] . In 1921-1922, Karinyan was in Turkey and the USA , he worked in the Armenian diaspora. In 1923-1924 he was the deputy chairman, in 1924-1928 he was the chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Armenian SSR, in 1932-1933 he was the director of the Institute of History of the Transcaucasian Committee of the CPSU (b), in 1933-1934 he was the deputy of the People's Commissar of Education of the Armenian SSR . He was elected a member of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia [8] .

Since 1940, Artashes Balasievich Karinyan was engaged in scientific activities. In 1941-1965, Karinyan was a senior researcher at the Institute of Literature named after Manuk Abeghyan of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, and later, from 1965-1982, he was a senior researcher at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR [9] . In 1953, Karinyan defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philology [9] . In 1956, Artashes Karinyan was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR [9] . In 1960-1963, Karinyan was an academician-secretary of the Department of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, in 1963-1965 - acting vice president of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR [9] . In 1961, Karinyan was again elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia [10] . In the same year he was elected a member of the committee for awarding the Lenin Prizes in the field of literature and art under the Council of Ministers of the USSR [9] [11] .

Artashes Balasievich Karinyan died on May 29, 1982 in Yerevan , at the age of 95. He was buried in the Yerevan city pantheon [12] .
