Zao is a French band who composed jazz fusion and tzoyl music. The backbone of the group was two former members of Magma : clarinet player Jochko Schaeffer and pianist Francois Caen. Leaving Magma , Francois Caen wanted to move towards cautious avant-garde jazz [1] . Compared to Magma , the sound has become softer, more creative improvisation and ethnic elements have become. In the second album, the departure from the Zeul style continued, the music more and more resembled the jazz-rock-fusion legend Weather Report . In 1976, the famous violinist Didier Lockwood (who appears in the Kawana and Live! Albums) joined the band, and Jochko Schaeffer left the same year. In 1977, the group breaks up. In 1994, the group reunited, the new album marked a return to the Zeil style. In 2004 - a tour of Japan, which results in an album with the classic numbers of the group.
