Biography
Ilya Mospanov was born on June 22, 1913 at the Zubovka farm (now - Mospanov of the Novooskolsky district of the Belgorod region ). He studied at the Zubovsky elementary school, then - at the Novooskolsky seven-year school. In Novy Oskol he was engaged in an aircraft modeling circle. Later, working at the Rostselmash plant, he entered the flying club. After finishing seven classes of the school and courses of mechanics, he worked as a tractor driver on a collective farm. In 1934, Mospanov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1937 he graduated from the Engels Military Aviation Pilot School. He participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war . Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By June 1942, the senior lieutenant Ilya Mospanov commanded a squadron of the 7th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment of the 230th Assault Air Division of the 4th Air Army of the Southern Front . By that time, he had made 69 sorties to attack accumulations of military equipment and manpower of the enemy, his important objects, inflicting heavy losses on him. During the year of battles with the Nazi invaders, a brave pilot on the Southwestern, Southern and North Caucasian fronts shot down 21 aircraft, destroyed 33 tanks, 140 vehicles and 13 field guns. On July 25, 1942, Mospanov died in battle. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Kagalnitskaya in the Kagalnitsky district of the Rostov Region [1] .
Rewards
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 23, 1942, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard, senior lieutenant Ilya Mospanov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded two Orders of Lenin and two Orders of the Red Banner [1] .
Memory
In honor of Mospanov, the street in Novy Oskol is named. At the request of fellow countrymen of the hero, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR renamed the Zubovka farm into Mospanov. In 1961, a monument to the hero was erected there [1] .
