Career

Theo de Grot was born in the north of Amsterdam, lived not far from Moseveld Street, where the stadium of the football club De Woleweikkers was [1] . This club was the first in the career of de Groot; at the age of thirteen, he moved to the youth team of the Ajax Amsterdam [1] . His friend and teammate Arend van der Vel was also included in the “red-white” [1] .

Five years later, de Grote made his debut in the first team at the age of eighteen. The attacker spent the first match in the championship on October 22, 1950 against the NEC club [2] . The meeting ended with the defeat of Ajax - 2: 1 [3] [4] . In the next round, Theo scored a goal against Vitesse [5] . In the debut season, he took part in four championship matches [3] . “Ajax” did not claim first place during the season and, as a result, took eighth place in its group [3] .

Theo got more playing time the following season : in sixteen matches, he scored fourteen goals, becoming the team's second scorer after Rinus Michels [6] . Amsterdamians won their group and reached the final part of the championship, but in the playoffs they took the last fourth place [6] . In total, over four years, de Grot took part in 30 matches of the Dutch championship, scoring 21 goals in them [2] .
