Biography
Youth
After graduating from the gymnasium and the Vilnius Drawing School of Ivan Trutnev in 1909, in 1910, in the wake of his father, he entered the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg . One of the teachers of Ludomir Slendzinsky was the famous Russian graphic artist Dmitry Kardovsky . At the end of the Academy of Arts, in 1916, received a diploma and the title of artist of painting. He lived in St. Petersburg at the address: Vasilyevsky Island , 10th line, 41.
In 1917-1920 he lived in Yekaterinoslav , where he worked at a military factory, then moved to Uman .
Vilna
In 1920 he returned to his native Vilna and began working as a drawing teacher at the Sigismund Augustus Grammar School. He founded the Vilnius Society of Artists and was its president until 1939. Since 1923 he was also a member of the Association of Polish Artists "Rhythm" and the associations of artists under the names "Gypsy Camp" and "Smorgon".
He taught at the University of Vilnius Stefan Batory . Since 1925 he was a deputy professor, in 1929 he was promoted to associate professor and deputy dean of the faculty, in 1931 - dean of the faculty of fine arts, in 1938 - professor in the field of monumental painting at the faculty of fine arts. His famous students were such painters as Pyotr Sergievich and Mikhail Sevruk .
In the years 1927-1929, together with his wife Maria traveled to France , Italy , Spain , England , Greece , Syria , Lebanon , Palestine , Egypt and Turkey . He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Krakow , Lviv , Warsaw , Prague , Stockholm , New York , San Francisco , Budapest , Paris , Amsterdam and Vilnius.
World War II period
During the war he was hiding in the estate of the Matusevich family, as evidenced by the portrait of Stefania Matusevich, written in gratitude for the hospitality. Secretly gave painting lessons during the occupation. In 1943 he was arrested and imprisoned in the Pravenishki concentration camp , located on the Kaunas - Kaisiadorys railway, in Lithuania, near Kaunas. After his release, he returned to Vilnius .
Krakow
In 1944 he moved to Krakow. He began to teach first at the Mining Academy, and then at the Technical University, where from 1954 to 1956 he held the post of rector.
Creativity
First of all, Ludomir Slendzinsky is known as a portrait painter, author of portraits of many representatives of the scientific and artistic Vilnius. His portraits of the artist Eduard Carney (1921), architect Pavel Vendzyagolsky (1923), the portrait of Maria’s wife opposite the Roman Forum (1925), Self-portrait (1926) were preserved.
He was the author of idyllic genre paintings, such as "Fishermen" (1922), "Gardeners" (1927), "In the Bathroom" (1930); landscapes: " Theodoric Palace in Ravenna " (1925), "Coast of Syracuse " (1927).
His monumental ceiling paintings are also known, in particular with the allegorical figure “ Polonia ” in the building of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers (1923) in Vilnius, frescoes in the conference room of the same building (1929), murals in the building of the National Bank in Vilnius (1938).
Memory
In memory of the four representatives of the Slendzinsky art dynasty in Bialystok, the Slendzinsky Gallery was opened.
