He began to play football in Serpukhov for the team of the Central Club of Trade Unions. From 1924 to 1926 he played for the Moscow club SKIF, from 1927 to 1928 for the OPPV / CDKA and from 1929 to 1932 for the RKimA / Hammer and Sickle . In 1933 he became a playing coach of Dynamo . Also from 1932 to 1935, Sokolov helped Mikhail Kozlov in the USSR team . In 1935 he was elected the first chairman of the All-Union Football Section . He was one of the organizers of the USSR Cup , Sokolov bought a crystal vase and became a Cup. Three times he came as a head coach to Dynamo Tbilisi . Under his leadership, the team became a finalist of the USSR Cup in 1937 , and in 1950 won bronze medals of the championship . From 1940 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1948 he worked as the head of the training and sports department of the Moscow Dynamo. In the early 1950s and mid-1960s, he was chairman of the All-Union Coaching Council of the USSR Football Section and the USSR Football Federation. From 1959 to 1976 he was a permanent member of the Presidium of the Football Federation of the USSR. In 1960-1986 he worked as executive secretary of the Federation of Sports Medicine of the USSR. He made a great contribution to the development of football and sports medicine in the country. The author of numerous manuals on football and other sports games. In 1955-1957 he was the first editor-in-chief of the journal "Sports Games" [1] .

In parallel with the game of football, he worked as a judge: he was the chief secretary of the main judiciary board at the 1928 All-Union Spartakiad .
