Biography

John Goldie was born March 21, 1793 in the village of Kirkoswald in the county of Ayrshire in the family of William Gowdy and Janet McClure. He had a craving for languages, from his student days at the University of Glasgow fluent in Greek, French and Hebrew, also understood Latin. He worked as a gardener in the Glasgow Botanical Garden , where he met the famous botanist William Jackson Hooker , under the influence of whom he went to travel. In 1815 he married Margaret Smith, daughter of the nerd James Smith . Immediately after the wedding ceremony, Goldie went to Edinburgh for an interview on inclusion in the British expedition under the command of J. Taki on the Congo River. By happy coincidence, Goldie did not go on an expedition, most of whose members died from a fever (among which was the botanist Kristen Smith ).

In 1817, Goldie arrived in Halifax , where he studied plants for two weeks, after which he left all the collected plants on the ship. When Goldie moved to Montreal, all plant specimens left in Halifax were lost. In Montreal, Goldie hoped, with the support of Frederick Pursch, to organize an expedition to North America, but Pursch refused him. In 1817 he reached New York on foot, after which he returned to Montreal. All plant samples collected on this journey were also lost. In 1818, he worked for some time on botany along the Ottawa River . Plants from this campaign sent to Scotland also did not reach the goal. In 1819, he reached Toronto , then to Niagara Falls and Pittsburgh , after which he returned to Montreal.

In 1824 he visited St. Petersburg . In 1830 he traveled to Russia again, and in 1833 to Montreal to visit his brother David in search of an affordable land plot. The eldest two sons of John emigrated to the United States in 1842. In 1844, John arrived in Canada with six youngest children, settling in Ontario . Having acquired a farm near the small village of Ayr and named it Greenfield, Goldie founded a poor nursery there, continuing to correspond with Hooker. In 1854, Goldie’s house was completely burned down along with diaries and plant samples from Russia and America. After the fire, a new brick house was built on the territory of Goldie's estate. Currently, a memorial plaque is installed near the Goldie estate.

July 23, 1886, John Goldie died in the village of Air Township North Dumfries of the regional municipality of Waterloo , where he moved in 1884.
