Biography
David Butler was born in 1635 in Amsterdam. Known in the history of the Russian fleet as the commander of the first Russian warship "Eagle" , appointed, at the behest of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich , to sail on the Caspian Sea and built in the palace village of Dedinovo .
David Butler was the cousin of the wife of the Dutch merchant Johan van Sveden, who was commissioned to recruit a crew for the ship in Holland - nee Maria Roots. Butler's mother, Agnes, was the sister of her father, a famous Russian merchant David Roots [1] .
Butler signed a contract with van Sweden in 1668 and helped him with the recruitment of the team. In Dedinovo Butler arrived in May 1670, where he took command of the ship. With this ship, Butler arrived in Astrakhan by the time Stenka Razin was expected to attack there. At the very last attack on the city, Butler left the ship, deciding to flee to Persia , to which many of his subordinates persuaded. But they, fearing to fall into the hands of Razin, set sail on a small ship, without waiting for their superior. Butler, who remained in Astrakhan, was captured by the rebels and witnessed what happened in the city after the capture of Razin. Then he managed to escape by boat to Dagestan , and from there to get to the Dutch monastery in Isfahan .
His letters to Holland about these events were published in the German edition of Strouys Travels, a sailing master on the crew of the Oryol [2] .
It is assumed that David Butler was the initiator of the appearance of the national flag in Russia, sending a letter to the king asking him about the flag for the ship [3] .
