Gavrilov, Alexander Ippolitovich

Alexander Ippolitovich Gavrilov ( 1856 - May 10, 1888 ) - a collector of folk songs, a zemstvo doctor of the Konstantinograd district of the Poltava province , compiled a rich, very remarkable manuscript collection of folk songs , mainly from Kharkov, Yekaterinoslav and Kiev provinces. After it remained a large handwritten collection: 57 notebooks of songs and many notes on separate sheets. Most of the songs are domestic. The second place in number is occupied by ritual, the third - by historical ones.

In ritual songs, the carol section is distinguished, for the most part ancient (more than a hundred) [1] .

While preparing these collections for publication, A. I. Gavrilov compared them to printed collections and discovered songs that had never been recorded before. Conscious of the close connection of the text of a folk song with music, he mostly remembered the motives of the recorded songs, but did not manage to put them on the notes [1] .

Alexander Ippolitovich Gavrilov died on May 10, 1888 in the village of Ganebnom, Konstantinograd district, contracting typhus when he helped sick peasants [1] .
