Sports career

Anya Andersen combines high technical skills and the will to win. She played a prominent role in the revival of Danish handball in the 1990s. After the 1994 European Championship, in which the Danish national team won gold medals, Andersen was given the nickname "Iron Lady" and the status of a nationally sporting heroine.

In the 1990s Danish national team, Andersen was the most gifted, and at the same time, challenging player. Having excellent sports skills, she simultaneously showed incontinence and was repeatedly replaced during key matches. At the 1996 Summer Olympics, coach Ulrik Wilbek temporarily suspended her from playing for disputes about playing style and behavior on the court.

Anya Andersen played 133 matches for the Danish women's team, gaining a total of 726 points. In 1997, Anya Andersen became the first and so far the only Danish woman recognized as a player of the year by the International Handball Federation .

Anya Andersen was the first to introduce show elements to handball. Being impressed by American basketball and especially by the Harlem Globotrotters team, she developed her own style that works more for the public than against the opposing team. After the end of her sports career, Anya organized a female handball "dream team", which in 2000 and 2001 played several matches with selected Danish teams. The matches were held with continued success, until Andersen stopped speaking due to health problems.

Anya Andersen ended her sports career in 1999 due to heart problems.

Coaching career

Having left the player’s career, Anya Andersen immediately switched to coaching at the Slagelse club, playing in the Danish Women's Handball League . She completed the minimum task, leading the team to the big leagues, and then three times led to the victory in the Champions League in the seasons 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2006/07. In 2006, Andersen also served as the coach of the Serbian national team.

In 2008, Andersen moved from Slagelse to FCK Håndbold . In 2010, she had to leave this place since FCK Håndbold was disbanded. Andersen decided to take a brief break before looking for a new team.

In February 2011, Anya Andersen became a trainer at the Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea club from Romania . Her main goal was to win the Champions League [1] [2] . But less than two months later she was fired due to the low results shown by the team: out of four matches of the main round of the season, two were lost [3] . In the summer of 2011, she joined the coaching staff of the men's team [4] .

In the 2012/13 season, Andersen coached a team of girls no older than 18 years of the Odense handball club [5] .
