Eigen ( German: Eigen ) is one of 17 administrative districts of the independent city of Bottrop ( North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany ). The name was first mentioned in 1410 as “up dem Eigen” when describing the peasant estate Schlangenholt.
Content
Regulation
The Eigen district, located in the central part of Bottrop, borders the urban areas of Batenbrock, Boy, Grafenwald, Stadtmitte and Fuhlenbrock. On the eastern border, Eigen adjoins the Ellinghorst area of Gladbeck.
Population
Aigen's population of approximately 12.5 thousand inhabitants is dispersed over an area of approximately 12 km².
Coal industry
Coal in the Eigen district has been discovered and actively mined since the beginning of the 19th century , but mining on an industrial scale only began in 1901 , when the Rainbaben mine was commissioned. Despite the fact that Bottrop is located in the region of intensive mining of the Ruhr coal basin and the whole territory of Aigen is located over several layers of carbon carbon , lying at a depth of 1 km, this mine was the only one in the region. It lasted until 1967 , when it was mothballed as a result of the coal crisis. Since then, coal has not been mined in the Eigen area.
Modern enterprises
- Brabus is the world-famous tuning company Brabus from Aigen, which maximizes the technical capabilities and design of the most expensive (in excess of $ 1 million) and fastest cars in the world (up to 370 km / h [1] .
- Siebel und Weyer - Family-owned enterprise for modern housing and corporate identity. Work with wood, glass and metal. The company has 150 employees [2] .
- Duft is a company manufacturing perfumes and other fragrant products. It manufactures products from Dolce & Gabbana , Armani, Boss and other well-known brands [3] .
Infrastructure
The center of the district is the market square , opened after the reconstruction of 2007 .
In the north of the district there is a bunch of two autobahns in Germany - “ A 2 ” and “A 31”. Local traffic is provided by the buses of the Festische Strassenbahnen GmbH company (Vestische Straßenbahnen GmbH). Aigen has its fleet of vehicles .
Tram History
Since May 28, 1909 a tram of the Glabdek-Bottrop line began to run through Eigen [4] . He followed the entire district from north to south along the main street bearing the name of the city of Gladbeck (Gladbecker Strasse, Gladbecker Straße). At that time the line was called “A” and in 1913 the trams ran with a 20-minute beat between Gladbeck, Bottrop and Osterfeld ( Oberhausen ). With the outbreak of World War I, the tact changed to 40 minutes. From 1907 to 1915, the tram network belonged to Die Recklinghausener Straßenbahn.
In 1915, the company was transformed into "Die Vestischen Kleinbahnen GmbH" and lasted until 1940 in this form. The time from 1924 until the outbreak of World War II became the “golden age” in the history of the local tram. Line number 18 was 14.5 km long and the tram ran with a 20-minute beat.
From 1940 to 1982, the tram company was called Vestische Straßenbahnen GmbH Festisch Strassenbahnen GmbH. In 1946, the numbering of the lines changed and trams No. 19, 22 ran through Eigen on the same rails. In 1957 they were replaced by No. 10. At that time, this line was the longest in the region. Its length from west to east was 35 km and it connected Recklinghausen with Oberhausen . Due to the active competition of buses in the post-war period, the tram tracks began to be dismantled and on November 27, 1976 the tram in Bottrop (tram number 17 ran through Aigen) was eliminated, although the tram name “Festishe Strassenbanen GmbH” still remains and refers to to the bus depot serving Bottrop.
Attractions and Tourism
Aigen is not rich in architectural attractions, but for local hiking and cycling, the territory of the Cologne forest is widely used, part of which is allocated to the conservation area [5] [6] .
- The Catholic Church of the Virgin "Beloved Lady" (Liebfrauenkirche). Built in 1909 . Its bell tower, 78 meters high, is the highest in the diocese of Essen . On Saturdays and Sundays it does not work [7] [8] .
- High bunker on the trading floor (district center). The gloomy gray building has been an open art gallery since 2010 . The exposure changes periodically (once every three to five years). Portraits of residents of the district of all ages and picturesque paintings by students of the local Willy Brandt school, paintings by senior students of Aigen’s primary schools have already been exhibited. This original project is funded by the Ministry of Land for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports, with the support of the local savings bank [9] .
- Old mining houses in northern Aigen on Gladbeck Street (Gladbecker Strasse, Gladbecker Straße). These are one and a half-story houses of the late XIX – early XX centuries, built of dark red brick with tiled dark orange roofs. The area is called “Rheinbaben-Siedlung Village” (Rheinbaben-Siedlung). Locals consider these houses the best for modern life [10] .
- Train Station Bottrop Nord . Old railway station on a single-track non-electrified railway. village Duisburg - Quakenbrück (Duisburg-Quakenbrück). Now there is no railway connection and the station building serves as a restaurant. The building has important local historical and architectural significance.
