- December 11 - in the article "The natural system of elements and its application to the indication of the properties of undiscovered elements" DI Mendeleev predicts the properties of not yet discovered chemical elements : ekabor ( scandium ), ekaaluminium ( gallium ) and ecacilicium ( germanium ) [1] .

- The Russian inventor, Mikhail Ivanovich Alisov, invented a typesetting machine , known as the “printer” or “writer”, in order to replace calligraphic rewriting of papers and manuscripts.

- Lomonosov Prize : A. N. Engelhardt and P. A. Lachinov [2] for a series of chemical studies described in the works “On isomeric creosols” [3] and “On nitro compounds” [4] .
- Copley Medal : James Joule - for experimental research on the dynamic theory of heat.

- March 4 - Yevgeny Oskarovich Paton , Soviet scientist-mechanic and engineer who worked in the field of welding, bridge engineering and structural mechanics, Hero of Socialist Labor, winner of the Stalin Prize (died in 1953 ).
- June 10 - Sergei Ivanovich Spasokukotsky , Russian and Soviet surgeon, founder of the scientific school, winner of the Stalin Prize (died in 1943 ).
- June 13 - Jules Bordet , a Belgian immunologist and bacteriologist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1919 (died in 1961 ).
- October 21 - Mikhail Nikolaevich Shaternikov , a Russian and Soviet physiologist who developed nutritional standards (died in 1939 ).
- November 17 - Sergei Nikolaevich Blazhko , a Russian and Soviet astronomer, one of the world's first photographed meteor spectrum, winner of the Stalin Prize (died in 1956 ).
