Kansei Engineering ( 感性 工 学 , English Kansei Engineering ) is a direction of industrial design based on the subjective feelings of the target user. The synonyms of the term are also used “emotional engineering”, “affective engineering”. Translated from Japanese, the term literally means “the psychological image of the product” [1] .

History

The term was introduced in the 1970s by the dean of the University of Hiroshima Mitsuoko Nagamachi . One of the first major projects developed in accordance with the principles of Kansi engineering was the creation by Mazda Motors of the Mazda MX-5 Miata in 1989.
