A group of Ugandan Christians died between 1885 and 1887 a year for refusing to worship pagan gods Their death was one of the elements of the political struggle for control of the royal court of Buganda.
History
In 1877, missionaries from the Anglican Society of Church Mission arrived in Buganda. Two years later, members of the Catholic monastic congregation of African Missionaries arrived in the country. By the mid-1880s, a small Christian community was formed from local residents in Buganda. In 1884, after the death of King Mutesa I, his son Mwanga ascended the throne of Buganda. His half-brother also claimed the throne, as a result of which civil war broke out in Buganda. Mwanga was deposed from the throne after the battle near Mengo and fled to the city of Ukumbi, taking refuge in a Catholic monastery, where he was later baptized . After ascension to the throne in 1888, Mwanga II executed several dozens of Ugandan Christians in retaliation for saving Mwangi. The excuse for execution was the refusal to commit the act of worshiping the pagan gods.
