The first major international start for Sven was the 1959 World Cup in Italian Courmayeur . In the individual race, having shown the best shooting among the participants - 6 misses, he won a bronze medal. In addition, together with Adolf Wiklund and Sture Ulin, he became the silver medalist in the unofficial team standings, the result of which consisted of the results of the three best biathletes of the same country in the individual race.

He entered the Swedish Olympic team at the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in the American Squaw Valley , in which biathlon in its modern form was first introduced as a discipline.
