The son of a German violinist and conductor and English mother who worked in England. As a teenager, he played drums in a city orchestra under the guidance of his father and learned to play the cello with the famous London teacher Hugo Daubert. Initially, however, Stern did not intend to pursue a musical career and was educated as a chemist, then working for several years by profession. But in 1883, he refused other studies and entered the Royal College of Music , where he studied with Alessandro Pezze , and then with Carlo Alfredo Piatti . Later he improved his skills in Leipzig with Julius Klengel and Karl Davydov .

Stern's touring career began in 1888 with participation in Adeline Patti's tour. Then he performed a lot in France, including in the ensemble with Emil Soray and Benjamin Godard . Stern's finest hour is connected with the cello concerto of Dvorak, the premiere of which he performed in the London Queens Hall on March 19, 1896 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the author - instead of Ganush Wigan , for whom this composition was written. Why this happened is not known for certain; among the proposed versions there are exotic ones (for example, cellist Stephen Isserlis , a frequent performer of the concert, claims that Leo Stern received the right to perform at the premiere, giving Dvorak, a passionate lover of pigeons, two birds of rare breed [3] ). Subsequently, Stern successfully performed a concert in Prague , Leipzig , Berlin , with great success was his performance in 1897 in New York [4] .

Stern was married twice: for the first time (1894) to the violinist Netty Carpenter , for the second time (1898) to the singer Susanne Adams . He owns a number of chamber plays for his instrument, as well as songs.
