About the Museum
The construction of Fort Lamu, where the museum is located, began in 1813 after the victory of local residents over the enemies in the battle of Shela. By 1821, the fort was completed, and thanks to its protection, trade began to develop around.
The British administration in 1910 began to use the fort to keep prisoners. He remained a prison until 1984, when he was transferred to the jurisdiction of the National Museums of Kenya. Thanks to the help of the Swedish International Development Agency, the fort managed to organize a museum.
On the ground floor there are exhibits on three topics: marine, freshwater and land. A significant part of the exhibition is devoted to the material culture of the inhabitants of the coast of Kenya.
On the second floor there are administrative premises, laboratories, workshops and a restaurant [1] .
