Biography
Nikolay Sauerweid was born in 1836 in the city of St. Petersburg in the family of the artist Alexander Ivanovich Sauerweid .
He studied at Petrishula since 1849. Upon graduation, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts , which he graduated in 1859 with the title of a class artist and a small gold medal awarded to him for his painting βThe Battle of Narvaβ. The following review about this picture has reached our days:
β There is a lot of life and movement, the group near the wounded man on the left side of the viewer is especially good; here the girl with her hair, in one shirt, covered her face with both hands is the most wonderful. Her posture is completely natural and simple; the face is not visible, but the whole figure expresses despair the most complete and at the same time so childish, which causes compassion as if it were a living being β [5] .
The following year, the film βThe Entry of Prince Repnin to Riga after the Seizure of this City on July 4, 1700 β gave Sauerweid the title of Academician. Among the canvases on military subjects the most famous (in addition to those mentioned) are the following works by the artist: βDeparture of Prince Repnin to Riga after the city was taken 4 / VII 1700β (1860); "The Cossacks drag off the sentry on the loop on a moonlit night" (1857); βBattle of Kuryuk-darβ (1858, academic exhibition); βThe Assault of the Redoubt of Schwartzβ (1854) and βThe Etude of the Battle of Oltenitsβ (1854) [5] .
In addition to the battle scenes, he also wrote genres (for example, Modest Moving from Apartment to Apartment, 1864 ). And in fact, and another kind of painting, as well as in watercolor drawings, Nikolai Alexandrovich Zauerveyd showed remarkable talent and could take a prominent place in Russian art, if not for his premature death. The last work of the artist was the "Portrait of Mr. Barry" (1865).
Nikolai Aleksandrovich Sauerweid died on June 10, 1866.
His brother Alexander also became an artist and also died rather young shortly after the completion of the IAH [6] .
