Biography

The son of Duke Ernst Ferdinand Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel-Beverna and Eleanor Charlotte of Courland . In 1742 he entered the rank of captain to serve in the Dutch army and in 1745-1746 participated in two campaigns. He joined the Braunschweig army, while remaining a volunteer of the imperial army. Under the leadership of his cousin Ludwig Ernst of Braunschweig, he commanded a regiment in the War of the Austrian Succession until the conclusion of the Aachen Peace of 1748 . Then he returned with the rank of colonel to the Dutch army and in 1754 was promoted to major general .

With the beginning of the Seven Years War , he left for Dresden at the end of 1756, where the Prussian King Frederick II appointed him commander of the forcibly recruited 8th Saxon Infantry Regiment. The regiment fled, and Frederick II laid the blame for this personally on Frederick Karl.

In 1759, Friedrich Karl resigned from the Prussian army and joined the British army. August 1, 1759 participated in the battle of Minden under the leadership of a cousin Ferdinand of Braunschweig .

In 1760 he joined the Danes, where he received a promotion. In 1766 he was appointed governor of Rendsburg , and in 1773 - Copenhagen . After the death of his brother Augustus Wilhelm in 1781, he became the head of the younger line of Braunschweig-Bevern.

In 1782 he received the rank of Field Marshal of the Danish army and, with the permission of the Danish king, lived in the castle of Glucksburg.

Family

On October 26, 1782, Frederick Karl married Princess Anna Carolina, daughter of Prince William of Henry Heinrich Nassau-Saarbrücken .
