Bembix melanopa (lat.) Is a species of sand wasps of the genus Bembix from the subfamily Bembicinae ( Crabronidae ). Found in southern and eastern Africa from Kenya to South Africa . Medium-sized wasp: body length about 2 cm. The body is stocky, black with a developed yellow pattern. Labrum stretched forward like a beak. Associated with plants of 4 families: Apiaceae ( Foeniculum vulgare Mill.); Apocynaceae ( Asclepiadaceae ); Asteraceae (Athanasia trifurcata (L.) L.); and Aizoaceae ( Mesembryanthema , "mesem"). Flies of 7 families were noted as victims: Tabanidae , Bombyliidae , Syrphidae , Muscidae , Calliphoridae , Sarcophagidae , Tachinidae . The species was first described in 1893 by the Austrian entomologist Anton Handlirsch ( Anton Handlirsch , 1865-1935) based on materials from South Africa [1] [2] [3] [4] .
