Biography

Born and raised in Lithuania. He served in the army of independent Lithuania, and after its annexation of the USSR in 1940 - in the Red Army . After the start of World War II, he was captured by the Germans and in 1942 voluntarily went to serve them.

Zayanchkauskas received ideological training from the Nazis and received incentives such as a vacation home for his service.

As the prosecution found, in 1943 he commanded a unit that was cordoned off around the Warsaw ghetto during the suppression of the uprising .

Zayanchkauskas admitted that a group sent to Warsaw from a concentration camp in Travniki stood in a cordon cordon, preventing Jews from escaping, guarded the area where the captured people were waiting for them to be sent to labor and concentration camps, carried out house checks to find hiding Jews, and entered into skirmishes with resistance fighters and participated in the executions of individual captured Jews.

After the war, he managed to hide in Austria , in 1950 to emigrate to the United States and by naturalization in 1956 to obtain citizenship. The questionnaire indicated that he did not help the Nazis during the Second World War . In America, he settled with his wife in Sutton , Massachusetts, and worked at a factory until retirement.

In 2005, Vladas Zayanchkauskas was deprived of American citizenship by a court in Boston . The judge admitted that Zayanchkauskas provided false information in the citizenship documents. In 2007, a court ordered the deportation of a 91-year-old immigrant to Lithuania, who, upon obtaining citizenship, kept silent about his participation in the Nazi destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943. According to the judge, Zayanchkauskas and his colleagues committed “terrible crimes”, in particular, murders and rape.

In July 2013, Zayanchkauskas was still in the United States, since not a single country, including Lithuania, wanted to accept him [2] . He died on August 5, 2013 [3] .
