Story
The last months of the Second World War. A cargo ship of the US Navy is standing off the coast of an island lost in the Pacific. Nothing threatens the ship, fighting takes place thousands of miles away. Sailors suffer from the heat, boredom, and harassment of Captain Morton, who boasts an impeccable track record; team morale as never before. The only active person on board is Lieutenant Roberts, in charge of loading. Sailors respect him because he is the only person who can protect them from the boss's self-indulgence. However, Roberts dreams of a completely different fate: knowing that the war will end soon, he wants to bring at least some benefit on the battlefield, and therefore time and again gives the captain a petition for transfer to a warship. And every time Morton responds with a subordinate refusal ...
Making a movie
Directed by John Ford was a natural choice for working on the film, since the naval theme was very close to him: during the war he served in the Navy and retired with the rank of rear admiral. Ford insisted on the invitation of Henry Fonda , who had once played for Mr. Roberts on Broadway , but hadn’t been filmed anywhere for eight years. The hard style of the director and his penchant for drinking soon led to a conflict between him and the Foundation. Because of this, as well as illness, Ford was unable to continue working on the picture and was replaced by Mervyn LeRoy , who asked the film crew to make a film that Ford himself would have made. In addition, some episodes were filmed by Joshua Logan , stage director of the play.
