Olaya ( Spanish: Olaya ) is a city and municipality in the west of Colombia , in the Antioquia department. It is part of the Western Antioquia subregion .

History

The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on January 1, 1773 . The Olai Municipality was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1936 .

The city is located in the western part of the department, on the right bank of the Cauca River , about 44 kilometers northwest of Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 743 meters above sea ​​level [1] .
The municipality of Olaya borders on the north with the municipality of Liborina , in the east - with the municipality of Belmira , in the south and southeast - with the municipality of Sopetran , in the west - with the municipality of Santa Fe de Antioquia . The area of ​​the municipality is 160 km² [2] .

Population

According to the 2005 census, men made up 51.8% of the Olai population, women - 48.2%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 98.2% of the city's population; blacks , mulattoes and Raisals - 1.8% [4] . The literacy rate among the entire population was 80.6%.

Economics

The basis of the Olai economy is agricultural production .
50.6% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 43.4% are service enterprises, 6% are industrial enterprises [4] .
