Biography

Born in the family of the general (and future president of the country in 1851-1855) Jose Tadeo Monagas .

In 1857, being the representative of the city of Maturin , he signed the April Constitution of the same year (in fact, amendments to extend the presidency to 6 years). In March of the following year, during the outbreak of civil war , he was appointed commander of the garrison of Aragua de Barcelona, however, despite the public support of President Julian Castro , he was suspected of disloyalty, arrested and imprisoned in Puerto Cabello [2] .

In July 1868, after the triumph of the "blue revolution" , he began a military career - he was appointed commander of the army of liberals. In this position, in August he led an attack on the large port of Puerto Cabello. From there, he continued to lead the “Western Union” ( Campaña de Occidente ) of the liberal forces, who defeated the so-called Western League ( Liga de Occidente ), the conservative forces. During the campaign, he liberated the cities of San Carlos and Barquisimeto .

The Blue Party, an alliance of conservatives and liberals, received two factions led by Jose Ruperto Monagas and Domingo Monagas Marrero, their cousin, the son of Jose Gregorio Monagas .

After the unexpected death of President Kh. T. Monegas in 1868, the internal contradictions of the “blues” sharply escalated. Jose Ruperto again took up the post of army commander. At the Extraordinary Congress, held in 1869, between José Ruperto and his cousin Domingo, a new head of the party and the country was elected. The choice was made in favor of Jose Ruperto, Domingo Monagas was elected vice president.

Jose Ruperto's attempts to end the civil war were unsuccessful.

At the beginning of 1870, in an atmosphere of growing chaos and anarchy, presidential elections were held, in which H.R. Monegnas won. However, the Venezuelan Congress refused to approve him as president, formally referring to the incompleteness of the submitted voter lists [3] .

In February of the same year, the troops of former President Antonio Guzman Blanco invaded the country. On April 27, his troops took Caracas, after which H.R. Monagas signed the surrender and left social activities, returning to his possessions in Aragua de Barcelona.
